Many glaciers in South Island, two most visited ones are not very far from where I live now, about 400 km away. Been there twice. The first time, it was a summer and really sunny that day, we wore only T-shirt walking along the glacier. I was so astonished by that scene, a gigantic white snake winding from other side of the mountain, lying beside me. Hard to describe the sensation, the air was cool and still and the nature was so overwhelming, could only say it was literally breathtaking!
Not mush snow on low land, even in South Island, it is usually on higher part of mountains, the South Alps, beautiful when in winter time.

Wonderful and peaceful land. Lot of snow and water. Can people swim at beach? Is the water too cold?
Only in winter time people here get away from water.
Lots of beaches and coastal areas for various activities-- swimming, surffing, kayaking and more..
