Chromium plume threatens big L.A. water source

LOS ANGELES — A well supplying drinking water to Los Angeles has been turned off due to the spreading of a contaminated groundwater plume that threatens an aquifer supplying 15 percent of the city’s supply, a May 28 MyFOX Los Angeles story reported.
The chromium-containing plume has, according to city leaders, been spreading under industrial areas, throughout the San Fernando Valley, for about two decades. According to the article, chromium was used by about 4,000 area businesses over the last 100 years.
Other wells in addition to the one shut down near the Burbank Airport might also have to be shut down, according to officials quoted in the story.
The shutdown comes at a difficult time. Los Angeles Water and Power Commission President David Nahai said in the story, “The Sierra snowpack is miserably low and we already have to buy a great deal of water.”
Residents will have to pay the $7.3 million needed to import water to make up for the lost supply.

Fortunately, I drink water from Anaheim City Utility, you know, the same water that Mickey mouse, Snow White and Winnie the Pooh drink.
Biker, you are the expert on water purification, how about RO water filtration, is it the best way to get safe water??
You can't call me an expert just becasue I drink more water than you do. Did you see my water belly? hahaha
RO indeed is a very good way to make good water. Most of the low end and cheap products are pretty good actually. Those high end products don't add much value and their prices are outrageous.
Before buying a RO you need to know what are the contaminants you want to remove and find out if that RO can do such job. But, if you only need general protection, a cheap brand RO will work just fine.
RO membrane is not a perfect barrier to remove all of the contaminants and microorganisms. We should only use it to treat microbiologically safe water, such as treated city water. One should never use it to filter unsafe water, unless it is specifically designed for this purpose. But, one has to check out those claims carefully. There are too many crooks out there. I actaully run into one today. He tried to sell me a $3,000 RO. lol
